AMERICORPS POSITION: Case Manager (Alternative Work Employment Program)
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
The International Institute of New Jersey is a non-profit committed to the goal of helping people in transition from one society to another, especially those who have endured the ravages of war, persecution and economic hardship. We provide a range of services designed to help clients, their families, and communities to become self-sufficient contributing members of American society. The International Institute seeks an individual to work as a full-time AmeriCorps member.

The AmeriCorps Case Manager is responsible for assisting AWEP clients to attain language proficiency, GED education and work experience; position also supports Cultural and Linguistic Competency educational initiatives.
Responsibilities:
• Interview clients to better understand their skills, training, educational background, and employment history.
• Under the supervision of the Department Manager, place clients in appropriate ESL/GED class and work experience activities.
• Promote retention and active participation in and completion of program activities.
• Check attendance of clients in other related workshops such as Job Readiness and Financial Literacy
• Develop new internship contacts and leads and maintain existing internship relationships.
• Research newspapers, websites, and other resources for internship leads.
• Work with Program Managers to identify and resolve any client issues that may impede financial self-sufficiency.
• Set up and maintain client files.
• Assist clients in resolving work experience activity related concerns.
• Perform Community Outreach and translate/Interpret as needed (or use interpreter/translator services)
• Work with Department Manager on maintaining and managing client database and perform client outreach.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Requirements:
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Must be able to represent the Institute well, be responsible, be able to work unsupervised, and keep appointments.
Must be highly motivated and have strong organizational skills and effective time management.
• Must have cultural awareness.
• Fluency in a second language is a plus(Spanish)
• Experience with foreign born populations.
• Proficient in Word, Excel and Power Point.
• Knowledge of Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties a plus
• Must show proof of permanent residency: green card, INS form I-551, or US Citizenship. Refugees and Visa Holders are not eligible.
• Must be able to commit to 35 hours/week (FT) for a full year. Some evening and Saturdays required.

AMERICORPS POSITION: Full-time LAW CENTER ASSISTANT

Responsibilities:

  • Ready to be trained in specific aspects of immigration law with the final goal of providing the individual an opportunity to interact with the law center’s clients.
  • Contact clients by telephone to set up interviews or obtain information.
  • Call various social agencies on behalf of clients to clarify or help obtain benefits for the client.
  • Interview clients under the supervision of the law center’s director to help process various immigration forms and petitions.
  • Perform various clerical work associated with the up keeping and management of client’s files.
  • Assist the legal staff in varied workshops and seminars to be developed for the immigrant community by the law center and additional duties as assigned.
  • Complete 1 citizenship project
  • Perform Community Outreach and Translate/Interpret as needed

  • Must be proficient with computer software and familiar with copy and fax machines.

  • Must be able to commit to 35 hours/week (regular schedule) for a full year.

Cross-Cultural Counseling Center

AMERICORPS POSITION:  Bilingual French/ENGLISH  CCCC Counselor/Case Manager Full-time

The International Institute of New Jersey (IINJ) has been a gateway of resettlement for hundreds of thousands of immigrants and refugees arriving in America. The Institute opens a new world of possibilities for immigrants through an array of programs such as legal assistance, English instructions, interpreting and translation, job and computer skills training, and mental health and counseling. Our Mission is to help immigrants and refugees to build full and productive lives in the United States.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct intake assessment interviews with new clients to IINJ to assess needs.
  • Work in cooperation with the Immigration attorneys to develop asylum petitions.
  • Build upon current resource/referral database and create/ maintain community relationships
    Make appropriate referrals to programs within and out of the agency – based upon eligibility.
  • Ensure follow-up with other CCCC program staff to ensure teamwork and case coordination on behalf of clients.
  • Document services provided through entering individual statistics in database and tracking sheets
  • Interpretation and translation as needed
  • Accompany clients to medical/legal/social services appointments as needed
  • Provide administrative coordination for weekly Case Conference meetings where new clients are discussed among program staff (i.e. develop systems to ensure new clients are discussed at meetings and at appropriate intervals; keep documentation on actions promised on behalf of clients.
  • With supervisor, help develop and administer quality improvement evaluation tools to participating clients to provide IINJ with feedback on the quality of services and/or gaps in services and additional duties as assigned.

  • Excellent written and verbal skills. Good organizational skills, excellent analytic ability and efficient time management
  • Desire and demonstrated capacity to work well with people in a cross-cultural “customer service” capacity

  • Must be able to commit to 35 hours per week for one year of service.
