Americorps Program

IINJ AmeriCorps – Bringing New Jersey Together

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages over one million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in rebuilding communities by meeting educational, public safety, environmental and human needs. AmeriCorps members in the IINJ AmeriCorps Program, “Bringing New Jersey Together,” help refugees and immigrants access much-needed services and resources.

Services provided by members include helping clients access social, educational and health services; providing legal assistance; interpreting and translating; teaching computer, ESL and citizenship classes; securing and distributing donations of food, clothing and household goods; and providing culturally appropriate and linguistically accessible counseling, especially for survivors of torture and victims of human trafficking.

In exchange for a one-year term of service, AmeriCorps members receive a stipend (in 2011 – $12,100 for full-time; $6,406 for part-time) and educational award (in 2011 – $5,550 for full-time; $2,775 for part-time). Childcare and health benefits are available to all full-time members. In addition, loan deferment for school loans and training to increase members’ marketability are also provided.
