The International Institute of New Jersey (IINJ) is the oldest immigrant service agency in the state. Since 1918, it has been a gateway of resettlement for hundreds of thousands of immigrants arriving in the US, first as a YWCA program and then as an independent non-profit organization after 1938. While their complexions, accents, and native languages may differ from those of their predecessors, today’s newcomers face challenges that are as compelling as ever.
IINJ opens a new world of possibilities for recently-arrived immigrants through its wide array of services, such as employment counseling, financial literacy training, legal services, interpreting/translation, English and citizenship classes, mental health counseling, and case management related to housing, medical care, and other basic needs. Free or low-cost and confidential, all services aim to accelerate each new immigrant’s journey to self-sufficiency.
In addition to helping immigrants navigate the conventions of American life, IINJ conducts conferences and training that bring new information about immigrants to leaders in various sectors, such as corporations, health care, government, law enforcement, education, and social services. IINJ also advocates for public policies that ensure the fair and equitable treatment of immigrants and refugees. IINJ’s staff, board, and constituents believe that immigration is a key engine of the American economy and an inspiration for the American way of life.
To achieve these goals, IINJ is one of the 32 affiliates of the US Committee for Immigrants and Refugees (USCRI), the largest, non-sectarian, immigrant service network in the nation. Through highly trained staff, many who are immigrants themselves and collectively speak more than a dozen languages, IINJ is the only agency in NJ to offer such comprehensive refugee resettlement services.
